Cross-country assignments released

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union have released the schools that will be at various sites to qulify for the state cross-country meet Thursday, Oct. 24.

The top three teams and top 15 individuals from each site will advance to the state meet Nov. 2 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

The top-ranked Mid-Prairie girls will be at the same Class 2A site as second-ranked Williamsburg. The seventh-ranked Danville-New London boys will also be at that site with No. 5 Williamsburg and No. 8 Mid-Prairie.

Mt. Pleasant and Washington will be at Solon for Class 3A while Fairfield will be at Pella.

'I feel like Evan Horak has a great shot to qualify for state,” Washington coach Stefanie Haworth said. 'He knows it won't be easy, but I believe if he runs like he has been then everything will work out. He will have some great competition next week.”

Haworth sees Clear Creek-Amana as the favorite.

'We have seen CCA and know how strong they are but I believe Evan has improved since we last ran against them. I think Lance Sobaski also has a chance to qualify as he has been steadily improving all season. Both boys have worked so hard all season I would love for them to achieve their goals.”

Clear Creek-Amana is the No. 1 ranked team in 3A and have five guys ranked in the top 30 individually.

'Team wise they will be tough,” Haworth said. 'There are several other ranked runners in our district as well, but believe CCA will be the toughest competition.”

Pekin has the No. 6 ranked girls team and No. 7 boys team. The Panthers will run at Iowa City Regina where No. 5 Calamus-Wheatland's boys are and Regina's girls are ranked fifth. Central Elkader will also be there with the No. 10 girls.
