Class 1A/3A begin quarterfinal play, 4A/5A open up consolation competition

Day Two of the 2023 Iowa high school softball tournament was a day packed full action.
Class 1A and 3A wrapped up its quarterfinal action on Tuesday, while 4A and 5A played the first round of consolation games.
In 1A quarterfinal action, No. 1 seeded Martensdale-St. Mary’s one run in the bottom of the sixth inning was just enough to get by No. 8 seeded St. Edmond, 1-0.
No. 2 seeded North Linn and No. 7 Sigourney needed eight innings to decide a winner.
The Lynx were able to get the walk-off run in the bottom of the eight to advance.
Six seeded Clarksville put together a stellar performance.
The Indians topped No. 3 seeded Southeast Warren 7-1 to move on to semifinals.
In the four and five seeded bout, No. 4 Wayne got the better of No. 5 Remsen St. Mary’s 8-2.
The squads were tied 2-2 after one inning, but the Falcons went on to score one in the fourth and five in the fifth.
Martensdale-St. Marys and Wayne will play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, while North Linn and Clarksville will play at 7:30 p.m.
St. Edmond and Remsen St. Mary’s will play at 1:30 and Sigourney and Southeast Warren will play at 3 p.m.
By the release of this story, semifinal and consolation games will be completed.
In class 2A, defending state champion and No. 1 Regina Catholic got by No. 8 Northeast with a walk-off in the bottom of the eight inning.
No. 2 Van Meter handled No. 7 Missouri Valley 6-1 in first round action.
Central Springs, the No. 3 seed, topped No. 6 West Monona 8-2 in their quarterfinal round.
The lone upset in Class 2A came from the matchup between No. 4 Lisbon and No. 5 Interstate 35.
The Roadrunners and Lions were tied 5-5 heading into the seventh, but Interstate 35 scored four in the seventh to win it.
Regina Catholic will take on Interstate 35 at 3:30 on Wednesday, while Van Meter and Central Springs will play at 5:30 p.m.
Northeast and Lisbon will faceoff at 11:30, while Missouri Valley and West Monona battle at 1 p.m.

In Class 3A, No. 2 seeded Davenport Assumption shutout No. 7 Saydel 5-0.
No. 3 Wahlert Catholic defeated No. 6 Benton 10-0.
The first consolation contest was complete with No. 4 Davis County edging No. 8 Albia 5-4.
Davis County fell to No. 5 Estherville Lincoln Central the day prior 11-3 to move to the consolation bracket.
Albia was defeated by No. 1 Williamsburg 11-1 in the quarterfinals as well.
Williamsburg and Estherville Lincoln Central will play at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Assumption and Wahlert Catholic will follow at 5 p.m.
In the consolation bracket, Benton will take on Saydel at 11 a.m.

Class 4A played just a pair of consolation games.
No. 2 Carlisle topped No. 6 ADM 7-5. No. 1 North Polk bounced back with a 8-2 win over No. 5 Western Dubuque.
In the semifinals, No. 3 Fort Dodge and No. 7 Winterset will take on one another at 11:30 on Wednesday.
No. 4 Norwalk and No. 8 North Scott will follow at 1:30.

In 5A, No. 8 Bettendorf downed No. 5 Valley in the consolation bracket, 8-3.
No. 3 Waukee Northwest was the victor in the other consolation game, 6-4, over No. 2 Ankeny.
No. 1 Ankeny Centennial and No. 4 Southeast Polk will play the first semifinal bout at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Following will be No. 6 Pleasant Valley and No. 7 Muscatine at 1 p.m.
Class 5A semifinal games will be completed by the release of this article.
