RIVERSIDE — Three is the magic number for the Highland softball team this year, The Huskies have scored three or more runs in each of their 17 wins this year, and they’ve lost all six times they failed to hit that threshold.
Wednesday night was no different. Highland reached the magic number in a 3-2 win over Pekin, the same score they used to beat the Panthers on the road in their first showdown of the year, and the same score they upset Winfield-Mount Union by on Monday.
The Huskies scored one run each in the first, second and fourth innings. Pekin plated one in the second inning, which tied it at the time, and scored once during a seventh-inning comeback attempt.
Sarah Burton went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Huskies. Katelyn Waters was 2-for-2, and Abbi Stransky went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Jessica Kraus picked up the win in the circle, holding Pekin to two runs (one earned) over 6 1/3 innings. Grace Batcheller came in to get a two-out save.
