Washington?s boys? track team saw three seniors go out on top on Thursday at the Southeast Conference track meet in Keokuk.
The Demons claimed one meet title on the day, coming from the 4x200-meter relay team of seniors Ethan Hansen, Bryce Rickey and Jack Giardino, while being joined by junior Kyle Schindler.
?I was elated for them,? Washington boys? track head coach Steve Roth said. ?Three seniors, who have been with me for four years, get to end as conference champs ? that?s outstanding. Then a junior who has put a lot of time into a lot of things, and we put it all together. They still have to come down a little bit, but you can?t take away the conference championship.?
The Demons took fourth in the five-team conference meet, while Mt. Pleasant claimed the team title with 155 points.
Overall, Roth was happy with his team?s performance.
?We had eight of nine guys who had PRs,? Roth said. ?It was a warm night and we ran everyone in three or four events and we had some great PRs.?
Individually, the Demons had two top-3 finishes, with Michael Ellingson claiming second in the high jump, clearing 5 feet ? 4 inches, while Caleb Bex claimed third in the 110-meter hurdles.
In the relays, the Demons were edged out of a conference title in the 4x100-meter relay, while also claiming second in the shuttle hurdle relay, and the 4x400-meter relay, which has run very strong lately.
?A couple of them are 800 guys, and I appreciate them coming down to run it,? Roth said. ?Bryce Rickey has had an outstanding season running 400s, 200s and 100s, and he just leads the way. The rest are following him, and they have a goal (for Thursday?s district meet).?
The Demons will run at Mt. Pleasant for the state-qualifying district meet on Thursday.
