WASHINGTON — The Washington boys basketball team played host to Newton in nonconference play on Tuesday night. The Demons fell at home to the visiting Cardinals, dropping the contest 64-49.
Washington and Newton traded blows in the first quarter, but the Demons trailed 34-17 at the halftime break.
Washington had a few chances to cut the lead to single digits in the third quarter, but the Demons could never get it done. Newton led 47-32 after three quarters and played Washington even in the fourth.
"Throughout this game, there were just key moments, where it was a missed layup or missed assignment on the defensive end," said Washington head coach Collin Stark. "I think we had it down to 12 in the 3rd with 30 seconds left, and we had a moving screen on one end, and then they hit a dagger three to get it back to 15."
Drew Conrad scored 14 points in the loss. Logan McDole and Nic Stone each scored 13. Seth Shepard finished with five, and both Kael Williams and Conner Leyden each chipped in with two.
The Demons have been on a slide since the calendar turned to 2025. Washington has now lost five-straight games after starting the season 5-3.
Washington (5-8, 3-3) will head to Fairfield (5-8, 3-3) on Friday night for a Southeast Conference battle.
