The Washington boys? golf team suffered a tough loss on Monday afternoon in Keokuk, but there were things that head coach Mark Berhow hoped the team will take out of the meet.
The Demons shot a low score of 151 to tie with Keokuk at the meet, and after the fifth-score tiebreaker didn?t settle the match, it came down to the sixth score, where the Chiefs had the edge.
?Every stroke counts and it was another classic example that you have to focus on every shot,? Berhow said. ?You can?t let any little putt or shot from the fairway get past you.?
Washington sophomore Dalton Myers was one off the lead pace at the meet, shooting a one-over 36 for the Demons to lead the way.
Junior Tanner Coleman and sophomore Jacob Van Osdol each shot a 38 on the day, while junior Noah Enfield connected on a 39 to round out the counting scores.
?Dalton played really well,? Berhow said. ?He birdied his last hole with a 30-foot putt he made for his 36. The four scores we counted, they all played very well having not played on that course at all. Next year, Keokuk hosts conference, so that?s a good sign for us (to shoot well).?
The Demons? scratch scores came from junior Mason Rich, who shot a 42, while senior Derek Anding carded a 46 on the day for the Demons.
With the conference meet coming up next week, Berhow said this was a good time to be edged out by an opponent.
?I think it?s one of those things where it?s nice to score well, and it?s not a heartbreaking situation because it?s more of a practice meet,? he said. ?We want to do our best, but it doesn?t really matter in the big picture. We can learn from it in a way that doesn?t cost us much.?
The Demons will be looking to focus for next week?s conference meet with a competition in Fort Madison on Friday. Fort Madison is also hosting the conference meet.
?It?s important for us to do well at (the meet),? Berhow said. ?We want to leave the Fort Madison course thinking we can do well. If we don?t shoot as well as we hope, I hope they come back with a sense of, ?I want to come back on Tuesday and beat my score? determination.?
