After dropping its first two games of the year, including a heartbreaker on Monday night, the Fairfield boys? soccer team was back on the pitch Thursday evening against the Washington Demons.
The Trojans earned their first victory of the year with a 4-2 win over the Demons in full time.
Off a nice lead pass, Washington freshman Andres Gutierrez gathered the ball on his right foot and struck an arrow of a shot past keeper Fejon Redd to put the Demons up 1-0 with 18:33 left in the first half.
It didn?t take the Trojans long to strike back, though. Fairfield took advantage of a mistake made by Washington?s keeper Thomas Zimmer.
On a sideline throw, Zimmer came out of his box to try to bat the ball out of the zone, but he missed it. The ball bounced around and finally settled on to Chaysten Titus? foot. All he had to do was tap it in, and he did just that to tie the game up at one.
After scoring three goals in Monday?s game, Fairfield?s Solomon Constant got on the board again for the Trojans. He made a terrific move and put the ball past the keeper to put the Trojans up 2-1 with six minutes left in the half.
The Trojans would strike just seconds later. This time, Spurrier beat the keeper with a shot just outside the box to give Fairfield a 3-1 lead which they took into halftime.
It didn?t take Fairfield too long to get on the board in the second half. A little more than 15 minutes into the half, Constant struck again.
Off a beautiful lead pass over the defense, Constant out-ran several defenders to gain possession of the ball. After he did that, the goalie basically signed his death certificate, because it was all over. Constant put it in for a 4-1 Fairfield lead.
Washington?s Joe Smith picked up his first goal of the season, and the Demons? second goal of the game with 12:38 remaining in the match.
Washington will host Keokuk on Tuesday afternoon, while Fairfield will face Knoxville on the road on Monday.
