WASHINGTON — A relatively young and inexperienced Washington boys basketball team had its hands full on Thursday and Friday, playing a couple of tough opponents, both of which had the clear advantage in past playing time.
The Demons played a Grinnell team on Thursday night, falling 48-31 to a Tiger squad that returned the bulk of their talent from last year. On Friday night, Washington fell 64-37 to a Keokuk team that did much of the same.
“We learned what varsity basketball was all about,” said Demon head coach Collin Stark.
Friday’s contest against Keokuk was the Southeast Conference opener for the Demons. The game got off to a rocky start, as Washington gave up an early 20 points to go down 20-6 after one quarter, and Keokuk turned it up some more in the second period to lead 37-13 at halftime.
The Demons played much better in the second half. Washington put together a little run to start the third quarter, and ended up down just 47-26 after the third period. In all, Washington lost the second half by just three points.
“The team that came in the second half was more a representation of what these guys can do,” Stark sad. “We still have things that we can work on, and it's still early in the year.”
Drew Conrad led the Demons with 11 points in the loss. Logan McDole and Nic Stone each had eight points. Rajan Roth and Kael Williams both scored three. Luke Schiebel scored two points, and both Cole Vetter and Andrew Shepherd finished with two.
The Demons fell to 1-2 on the season. Washington plays at Pella on Tuesday.
“We've talked as a team how it's not how you're playing right now. It's how you are at the end of the year. If the results aren't coming, you just have to come back the next day.”
