FORT MADISON — The Washington boys soccer team put up a heck of a fight against the defending Southeast Conference champions on Monday night, but the Demons came up just short 2-1.
The Demons trailed early in the contest after the Bloodhounds found the back of the net off a free kick about five yards beyond the 18 yard mark.
Washington continued to battle through the first half and was able to hold Fort Madison to just one goal by the halftime whistle.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the Demons were able to keep the game within one until the four minute and fifty-six second mark. Fort Madison was able to rattle in its second goal of the contest, making it a 2-0 ballgame.
The game wasn’t over yet for the Demons as they were able to get on the board with 1:36 left on the clock after Angel Mata found the back of the net off a corner kick to make it 2-1.
Cole Anderson played 80 minutes for Washington in goal and finished the game with eight saves.
“I'm proud of this team and their hard work tonight,” Washington coach Sally Hart said. “They never gave up and tried to come back from behind all the way to the last seconds of the game. I look forward to seeing their progress as the season continues.”
Washington, now 2-1, plays Sigourney-Keota on Tuesday and will face off with Southeast Conference foe Fairfield on Thursday.
