The 2025 Southeast Conference basketball season is one month, and three games, into a 10-game race to the top.
After three games in the SEC, it’s Washington that stands atop the conference. The Demons have three wins in the league, beating Keokuk, Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant.
A testament to how tight the league race has been this year, the Demons actually trailed in every single one of those games at halftime.
Keokuk led Washington 32-21 at the break, but Washington rallied to win 57-51. Fairfield was on top of the Demons 24-18 after two quarters, Before falling 55-47, and Mt. Pleasant led Washington 27-23 when the two teams went into the locker room, but the Demons again stormed back, taking the game 61-50.
Washington sits one game above both Fort Madison and Burlington going into the new year. Those two teams played each other in the final league game of 2024, with Fort Madison prevailing 57-51, but the Bloodhounds lost a game earlier in the year when Fairfield pulled out a thrilling 57-55 victory, ending the Trojans’ yearlong losing streak in the process.
Overall, the Trojans sit at 1-2 in the conference, having lost to both Washington and Keokuk. Mt. Pleasant is the only winless team in the league so far, taking losses to Burlington, Fort Madison and Washington, all by 11 points or less.
On Friday night, Washington will put its first place spot-on the line against Fort Madison in a game that will be broadcast live on the Southeast Iowa Union’s “Southeast Iowa Live” Facebook and YouTube pages. Fairfield will host Burlington, and Mt. Pleasant will play host to Keokuk.
