FORT MADISON — The Washington cross-country teams just keep winning. The Demons have done a lot of that all regular season, and they kept the good times rolling during Thursday night’s Southeast Conference meet.
The Washington boys won the meet by 22 points over second-place Fort Madison. The Demons were led by senior Micah Rees, who closed his SEC career out with a second-straight individual championship.
“There were tears in my eyes coming across the finish line,” Rees said. “It never gets old.”
Rees finished the race in 16 minutes, 40 seconds flat. He won by over 30 seconds.
“I wouldn't trade it for anything,” Rees said. “I love this sport. I love the guys. We all love each other.”
Washington’s Tyler Alderton took second place, in 17:13.6. Andrew Rees made it a one-two-three finish for the Demons, crossing in 17:20.
Washington’s Lane Schrock and Sawyer Tschantz finished 11th and 12th respectively. Andrew Shepherd was 14th, and Kael Malichky took 19th.
The Mt. Pleasant boys put three runners in the Top-8, which put the Panthers in third as a team. Jude Dykstra was the top Panther runner, finishing fourth place, in 17:22.8.
Ben Carthey took fifth place overall, crossing in 17:30.1. Locken Henderson was eighth, in 17:33.5.
The next Panther across was Coleman Mowery, who finished 20th place. Garrett Landau was 26th. Drake Landau took 34th, and Moroni Sanchez was 44th.
The Fairfield boys finished fifth overall, led by a 21st-place finish by Gabe Tejada. Riley Perkins was 24th. Ben Boatrigh took 28th. John Miller was 29th. Solomon Claussen was 32nd. Clae Cass and Eli Zillman finished 40th and 41st.
The Washington girls had to fight for every spot. The Demons scored 39 points on the day, just five ahead of second-place Fort Madison.
“It's amazing,” said Washington senior Abigail Kleese. “We've had an up and down season, with a lot of people fluctuating through varsity. Just to be here as a team and just run this as a team is amazing.”
The Demon girls were led by Iris Dahl, who took second place individually. Dahl finished in 20:30.1, behind only Fort Madison’s Avery Rump.
“There was one time that Fort Madison beat us, so we know they're on the radar,” said Dahl. “We just try to go for red, and try to get them.”
It was once again the depth of the Demons that carried the squad to a title. Washington put all seven varsity runners in the Top-13.
Alyvia Anderson was just a few spots behind Dahl, taking seventh place, in 21:45.1. Angelne Anderson was ninth, in 21:58.4. Quincy Griffis took 10th, in 22:08.8. Kleese was 11th, in 22:29.7. Isabella Lujan finished 12th, in 22:31.4, and Kendall Hinrichsen crossed in 13th, in 22:33.6.
Fairfield took fourth overall, thanks in large part to another big finish by Carley Seeley. Seeley took fifth overall, crossing the tape in 20:51.9.
The Trojan girls put two in the Top-20. Caroline Van Pelt was 18th, and Malena Bloomquist took 19th.
Paige Bisgard finished 29th for the Trojans. Bailey Belzer was 31st. Tara Carter and Emerson Porter crossed in 49th and 50th.
Mt. Pleasant took sixth on the girls’ side. The first Panther across was Nelle Peterson, who finished 28th. Monroe James was 34th. Jayden Yoder took 36th. Tatum Kane finished 52nd, and Hailey Parrot was 60th.
The Washington boys and Mt. Pleasant girls both won the Middle School titles.
The Demon boys were led by first place Parker Tschantz. Jack Shepherd took fourth. Teag Miller and Zander Magnuson were ninth and 10th.
The Mt. Pleasant girls had an individual champion in Avery Fedler. Bella Dodds was fourth. Quintrie Lee took fifth. Josie Dykstra was seventh, and Elodie Rawson finished eighth.
