Washington fell behind Williamsburg 30-0 after one quarter of play and ended up losing to the Raiders 54-20 in Friday?s freshman football game at Bob Murphy Stadium.
?We did not get off the bus ready to play,? Washington head coach Jay Zieglowsky said. ?It was a good lesson in getting focused. I could tell in warm-ups we weren?t ready to go, and I had to chew them out during warm-ups to tell them to get focused. I don?t think I?ve ever had to do that in my coaching career.?
For the second week in a row, Washington?s opponent returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. The Demons fumbled on their second play from scrimmage, and Williamsburg scored two plays later to take a 16-0 lead three minutes into the game.
Williamsburg led 30-0 after one quarter of play and stretched that lead to 46-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
?I told the boys last night at practice that I have never been involved in a game I?ve coached where we had more of a lack of focus,? Zieglowsky said. ?We had a practice on mental preparation last night. But that?s part of it. You have to teach them all the lessons, not just football.?
Washington (1-5) scored all of its points in the final quarter. Christian Mejia, who rushed for 229 yards on 21 carries in the contest, ran for touchdowns of 66 and 16 yards. Ethan Hansen, who rushed for 45 yards on 13 carries in the game, also ran for a 7-yard touchdown. Bryce Rickey ran for 36 yards on 10 carries in the contest.
Hansen made 13 tackles in the game to lead the Demons defensively. Darius Stogner made five tackles, and Michael Ellingson had three stops.
The Demons return home this week to take on Mt. Pleasant on Friday at 5 p.m. at Case Field.
?This is rivalry week with Mt. Pleasant, so they?ll be ready to go,? Zieglowsky said.
