It was a big tournament for the Washington volleyball team on Tuesday evening.
The Demons went to Wapello for an early-season tournament, and came away with three victories, which matches half of the team?s win total from a season ago.
After falling in the first four matches of the season at Grinnell, the Demons bounced back for three straight-set victories against Central Lee, Columbus and English Valleys, improving the team?s record to 3-5.
Against Central Lee, the Demons cruised to a 21-11, 21-12 victory, led by Morgan Kimball?s four kills.
Freshman Isabel Bailey and seniors McKenna Brinning and Amber Salow each had two kills in the match, while junior Jessie Buchholz and Kimball each had two aces.
Sophomore Megan Mitchell had eight assists in the match.
Against Columbus, the Demons cruised in the first set, taking it 21-2, before closing out the match with a 21-15 win.
Buchholz was strong on the serve as she was successful on all 14 of her attempts, notching eight aces to her credit.
As a team, the Demons went 39-for-39 on serves, and had 19 aces, and won the match with just five kills.
In the third victory of the night, the Demons defeated English Valleys 25-11, 25-10, with Kimball and junior Olivia Postl posting four kills each to lead the team.
Mitchell added seven assists in the match, while Buchholz, Postl and senior Joceline Spenner had two aces.
In the lone loss of the night, the Demons fought hard in the first set against Wilton, losing 23-21 and then falling in the second set 21-9.
