MT. PLEASANT — It was a might tighter game the second time around when Mt. Pleasant hosted Washington on Friday night, but the end result was still the same, as the Demons walked out on top.
Washington held Mt. Pleasant to just nine points in the second half to finish off the season sweep with a 40-29 victory.
After falling by 26 in Washington earlier this year, Mt. Pleasant gave the Demons a scare in the first half. The Panther defense played stellar in the first half, and Mt. Pleasant went into the break leading 20-19.
Though Mt. Pleasant’s defense stayed tough in the final two quarters, the Panthers went ice cold on the offensive end. Washington quickly took the lead back in the third period and took a 34-24 advantage into the fourth.
“We just kind of made sure we knew where we were trying to get them to drive the ball,” said Washington head coach Shannon Rugg. “We didn't do a very good job of that in the first half.”
Mt. Pleasant turned 15 offensive rebounds into 45 shot attempts in the game, but the Panthers ended the night with just 10 made field goals.
“We've just got to finish,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Curt Watson. “That has been our theme for the last two months, is finish shot underneath the basket.”
Washington’s Kendall Hinrichsen scored 11 points to lead her team. Addison Miller and Maci Williams each scored eight. Lauren Hinrichsen and Oaklee Sobaski finished with five points each, and Jacey Berg ended with three.
Mt. Pleasant’s Juliana Burns had a big night, scoring 11 points. Myah Starr finished with six. Paityn Ensminger scored five. Abby Carthey had three. Hailey Parrott scored two points, and Kynlee White pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Washington fell to Oskaloosa 49-37 on Saturday. The Demons are now 8-8 overall and 5-3 in the Southeast Conference. Mt. Pleasant fell to 3-13 overall and 1-6 in conference play after a 57-33 defeat at the hands of Mediapolis on Saturday.
