It was a dogfight, according to Washington girls? golf head coach Leonard Kull, but the Demons ended on the wrong end of the scorecard.
The Washington girls? golf team took on Iowa City West in a dual on Monday afternoon in Coralville, and the teams finished the meet in a tie, both posting scores of 178.
Due to tiebreaker rules, the Demons were given their first meet loss of the season, but Kull wasn?t treating it as such after all was said and done.
?(The loss is) of no consequence because we performed at a high level against a quality opponent on their field,? Kull said. ?We have only positive things out of this meet.?
The Demons move to 4-1 overall in meets this season, and after playing a top-flight team in Iowa City West, it should only boost their confidence heading into the season.
?It can?t help but give them confidence,? Kull said. ?I don?t know if they fully understand the level we are playing at and how important it is that they compete against quality competition. I think it?ll start dawning on them that we have a bit of a special situation here and this is going to be quite a ride for us as we go forward.?
Freshman Sarah Nacos led the way for the Demons with a 40, followed by Deanna Peiffer?s 43, Sarah Waite?s 45 and Brenna Burlingame?s 50 to round out the counting scores.
Kull noted Burlingame?s improvement this year, and said she has made big strides recently.
?She?s been working very hard on her game and it?s starting to show,? Kull said. ?That will be huge for us and her scores have been higher than she wanted. We had a team meeting and I asked everyone what they?ve been happy with, and we?ve worked on things they felt were deficient. Brenna said chipping and putting were the major needs for improvement, and she?s really been working on that.?
Megan Strabala scored a 58 for the Demons, while Meridith Lumberg carded a 62.
The Demons will next compete at Keokuk on Thursday, when the Chiefs host Fairfield as well.
