WASHINGTON — On its first night out in 2022, the Washington girls soccer team enacted a little revenge for one of its losses last season.
The Demon girls shut out Centerville 3-0 in a nonconference game on Tuesday, earning some vengeance for a 5-4 loss to the Redettes last season.
Washington shut out a Centerville 3-0 to start the season off on a hot note.
“I’m really happy,” said Washington head coach Steven Caulk. “I’m really proud of the way we played out there.”
Senior goalkeeper Elyse Hunt spent the whole game in net, and made some key saves throughout the day to preserve the shutout.
“I'm excited,” Hunt said after the win. “It's been a good start to the season. It's promising.”
It was a strong start for a team that graduated almost half its team from last year. Hunt says a crop of new players have the Demons feeling confident heading into the new year.
We have a lot of new people this year,“ Hunt said. ”I've got a bunch of my friends who came out this year who had never played soccer a day in their life. It's so much fun. It's a great team dynamic.“
Greta Rothe scored two goals on the day. The Demons’ leading returning scorer made it 1-0 with a goal 10 minutes into the game, and scored the only goal of the second half to make it 3-0.
“Greta is an outstanding player,” Caulk said. “She always has been. She does so many things so well, that it's almost impossible to list them.”
Alex Murphy scored the second goal of the game for the Demons, putting one more in before halftime to give Washington a 2-0 advantage.
Washington is scheduled for a road game at Columbus on Thursday evening.
