WASHINGTON — Friday night’s Highway 1 girls basketball battle between Washington and Fairfield happened in three phases. At the end of phase three, the Demons had a Southeast Conference win.
For the second time this season, Washington was the better team in the second half, rallying past Fairfield 36-32.
The opening phase of the game saw Washington sophomore Adalyn Long put together a phenomenal opening quarter. Long dominated for eight-straight minutes, scoring 10 points in the first period to lead the Demons to an early advantage.
Unfortunately for the Demons, Long went down with an injury right at the first quarter buzzer. The Demons had to regroup without their leading scorer, and the Demons’ lead was just five, at 19-14 after one quarter of play.
Fairfield came roaring back in the third quarter. The Trojans won the third period 11-5, taking advantage of the short-handed Demons and grabbing a 25-24 lead heading into the last eight minutes.
In the fourth, Washington’s defense stepped up to the plate. The Demons forced turnover after turnover to start the quarter off, and a couple of key shots from the outside helped Washington to an 11-point quarter of their own, enough to topple the Trojans for the second time this winter.
“We started to get going and then Addy goes down, so we had to regroup,” said Washington head coach Shannon Rugg. “But this group had a really good week of practice, and it is starting to show.”
Despite not playing in three of the four quarters, Long still led the Demons in scoring. She finished with 10 points on the night.
Addison Miller and Kendall Hinrichsen each scored eight points for the Demons. Lauren Hinrichsen scored five, including a dagger 3-pointer down the stretch. Oakloee Sobaski scored three points, and Jacey Berg ended the night with two.
Fairfield’s Savannah Hollander paced all scorers with 13 points in the loss. Grace Lyon scored seven points. Emma Metcalf finished with three. Faith Jones, Briana Steele and Elyse Setterstrom all had two.
Washington fell at Keokuk on Saturday, dropping a game 59-32. The Demons are now 7-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play. Fairfield is 0-6 and 2-10.
