Many Iowa track and field teams flocked to Pella on Saturday for the Indoor Invitational held at Central College.
With so many schools there, the Washington girls? track and field team went in with one goal: To see where they measure up.
?Saturday our goal was just to let everyone compete and see how much improvement we have made since our last indoor meet,? Washington girls? track and field head coach Stefanie Tschantz said. ?It was nice to run against schools we don?t see often.?
There were many highlights for the Demons at the meet, led by a trio of individual top 10 finishes.
Washington senior McKayla Miller stood out with an eighth-place finish in the shot put, putting together a long throw of 32 feet ? 10 inches, qualifying for the finals by more than 5 inches.
?McKayla had an outstanding meet, she has been throwing pretty well in practice so it was nice to see her come out Saturday and throw (well),? Tschantz said. ?To get eighth in a meet with that great of competition is something to be proud of. As we head into the outdoor meets we are looking to see her throw well at every meet and stay consistent. She is definitely capable of big things.?
Freshman Isabel Bailey impressed in the running events, notching a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash among a strong field.
?Isabel had a great meet as well,? Tschantz said. ?She had a phenomenal race in the 400. She was hurting a little after that first 200, and it was pure guts on that last 200. To place seventh as a freshman in that competition is outstanding. I think once we get outdoors her times will drop even more as the curves were pretty tight at Central and they can be pretty hard to run.?
In the 3000, Maggie Voss picked up a ninth-place finish, finishing just under 13 minutes with a 12:49.10, and Tschantz feels as if Voss is a runner to watch out for.
?Maggie had a great race in the 2 mile,? Tshantz said. ?She has been working so hard in the offseason and pushing each and every day during practice, so it is nice to see her hard work paying off.?
In the relays, Washington had the 4 x 800-meter relay team of Molly Sparks, Emme Keith, Brooke Stout and Ashley Telleen finish in fifth place with a total time of 10:42.95, a time that Tschantz thinks will continue to fall.
?I change the order up a little and it seemed to work for us on Saturday,? Tschantz said. ?Molly and Ashley are both freshman and I look for their times to drop a lot as the season progresses. I know last year (the relay) just missed state so I know they are really hoping to get there this year. They are working hard every day in practice and I expect that relay to do well for us.?
Washington?s girls will next run at West Burlington on March 29.
The Washington boys did not run at Central.
