After scoring 27 goals in a five-game winning streak, the Washington High School girls soccer team has been shut out in its last two losses.
Ft. Madison achieved its first Southeast Conference win Thursday with a 2-0 defeat of the home standing Demons, which suffered their first league loss.
'I don't know what to say about why we got shut out for the second game in a row,” WHS head coach Protacio Marcelino said. 'I don't know, but I do know we are going to work on it. I think my team needs to spread out more. We got caught being too close together. We were just standing around watching the ball roll. We will get it. We are going to get back to scoring some goals.”
The amount of goals the Demons had scored already this season got noticed by the Bloodhounds.
'We changed our formation and played with one more person on defense,” FM head coach Sebastian Seifert said. 'I looked at their stats and saw how many goals they have scored, so I felt we needed to do something to address that. Plus it was an away game on a different field, so I thought it was important to be defensive, maintain our positions and take our time when we got the ball.”
FM got on the board about halfway through the first half when Kaeli Hutson placed a corner kick, then Anna Kester did a leaping back kick to deflect the ball to Brandy Walker, who put it past Olivia Pacha in goal.
With 20 minutes, 35 seconds left in the match, a handball was called on Washington and Ft. Madison's Dezire Kline put the penalty kick in for the 2-0 lead, her fifth goal this season.
'I thought it was important to maintain possession and try to get lucky and that is what happened,” Seifert said. 'I mean our goals happened on your basic standards, a corner kick and a PK.”
FM is 4-2 overall, 1-2 SEC. They have losses to Fairfield (3-1), which WHS defeated, and Mt. Pleasant (2-0). FM also defeated Mediapolis, 3-2.
'We have played all away games so far in the conference, so it is always different,” Seifert said. 'We need Washington to beat Mount Pleasant and we will all be tied.”
The Demons, 5-3. 2-1 SEC, play Mt. Pleasant Monday.
'I don't know what's happening with the penalty kicks,” Marcelino said. Washington lost to Mediapolis 1-0 Monday on a penalty kick. 'There was a lot of stuff that they should've called but they didn't it, then they called that one on us. I don't know what to do about that. I honestly don't know.”
Ft. Madison 4, Washington 2
The Demon boys suffered a 4-2 Southeast Conference loss at Ft. Madison Thursday.
The Bloodhounds got a gift to take a 1-0 lead.
'Their first goal was an own goal,” Washington head coach Sally Hart said. 'Then Simeon Buie dished the ball off to Garrett Ikerd, who dribbled through four or five defenders and got a goal.”
It was Ikerd's first goal in his senior season.
The score was 1-1 at halftime.
'Then Ft. Madison came out stronger,” Hart said. 'They scored a penalty kick after we had a hand ball in the box.”
The Bloodhounds added another goal to go up 3-1.
'But we never stopped pursuing the goal,” Hart said.
Hart made a change with about 20 minutes left, replacing Benjamin Baughman in goal with Cole Anderson and Baughman went to the field.
'Cole let a goal in to make it 4-1,” Hart said. 'With 30 seconds left, Ben crossed the ball in to Noah Suchan and he got the goal.”
Washington is 2-5, 1-2 in the SEC. The Demons play at Mt. Pleasant Monday.
