The Washington Demon girls lost their season opener Monday, April 10, to West Liberty 1-11.
The Comets got up early in the game with a goal and scored three more within the first 23 minutes of play. Neither team would score the rest of the first half.
Washington?s only goal was scored by senior Jessie Buchholz early in the second half, with a little more than 35 minutes left on the clock.
Coach Kyle Collins says the first goal of the season is a plus.
?You?ve already been scored on four times and the team continues to come back trying to score and she along with the rest of the team still had the drive to score and not give up. It was good.?
That would be the Demons? only point as West Liberty would continue their scoring drive and would put up another seven points and end the game by mercy rule with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Collins says of the loss, ?we had a lot of new girls; a lot of freshmen. We haven?t had a lot of playing time on the field this year, practice-wise.
?For a lot of them it was kind of their first time out and they?re just getting the feel for it.?
Even though the girls lost by 10 points, they didn?t give up, and Collins encouraged them not to.
?Totally,? he says. ?They always keep going, all the way to the end. You?re always learning and always working your body getting ready for the next game.?
Speaking of the next game, the Demon girls play at Mid-Prairie Tuesday, April 11. How does Collins think the girls will do?
?I think there will be fewer butterflies. We can figure out some better positioning.
?I?m hoping we score more and keep Mid-Prairie at scoring less. Other than that, the girls played the whole game and gave it all. I know they will do that again.?
Today?s game starts at 5 p.m. and will be played in Wellman.
