FAIRFIELD — In a battle between Southeast Conference soccer foes on Thursday night, it was the Washington girls coming out on top, 9-2, over Fairfield in the two’s first meeting of the season.
For the Demons, it was a complete performance on both ends of the ball.
In the early stages of the game, at the thirty four minute twenty three second mark, there was a scary moment for both teams. Washington’s Alex Murphy and Fairfield’s Kiara Bickham collided, resulting in both to be carted off the field.
After play resumed, just three minutes later, Washington struck. The Demon’s Giselle Marcelino got free from the Trojans back line and was able to slot the ball past Fairfield keeper Delaney Breen.
For the next 16 minutes, Washington continued to control possession of the game, taking shot after shot at goal but couldn’t to find the back of the net.
With 15:39 to go in the first, Marcelino picked up her and the Demons second goal of the night. From then on the flood gates were opened as the Trojan’s struggled to contain the Demon’s offensive pressure.
For the rest of the half, Washington slipped in four more goals, giving itself a 6-0 lead at the break. Marcelino added one additional goal in the first, finishing the half with three scores.
“I think we did really well,” Washington coach Steven Caulk said. “We were moving some players around from positions trying a little bit different formation. It’s still a little new to us. All in all everything went well.”
Washington came out with the same intensity to start the second half. The Demons scored three more goals in the second half, bringing their goal total to nine.
Fairfield was able to get two points on the board with Savannah Hollander and Lilian Buie in the final stages of the game.
“It was the same thing as last time,” Fairfield coach Alex Cardenas said. “Just a little bit of inexperience. For us as a coaching staff, that’s a huge step up. From a couple games ago to that it’s night and day difference. We’re slowly, but surly getting there, but not quite there yet. Practice is starting to pay off.”
Five different Demons scored in the contest. Along with Marcelino’s three goals, Greta Rothe and Ava Turner scored two each. Nicoll Torrijos and Ana Mata each finished with one.
Washington improves to 5-1 on the season, while the Trojans drop to 0-3.
Washington will travel to Keokuk on Monday and Fairfield will head to Mt. Pleasant.
