Every stroke mattered on Tuesday, and Ally Wertz notched a big one at her home course.
A chip-in birdie on the final hole of the day gave the Mid-Prairie senior meet medalist honors during a triangular meet that featured Washington and Columbus.
Wertz?s 39 led all individuals in the meet, while the Demons claimed the team title, posting a 184 at the Kalona Golf Course. Washington head coach Leonard Kull noted that the course provided new challenges to his team.
?This was a good meet for us, because the course was set up fairly tough,? Kull said. ?That?s the kind of course you can?t just go attack. That was one of our scouting points going into it. You can get into a lot of trouble, and if you don?t get out quickly, scores will go up fast. The team learned and it was a good learning situation for us.?
Columbus finished in second at the meet, posting a 212, while Mid-Prairie carded a 216 as a team.
?The girls keep improving every meet and have dropped strokes from their team score total in each match so far,? Mid-Prairie girls? golf head coach Tracy McArtor said. ?I like the way they are trending, but we are still struggling with a one or two really big numbers per round and need to get those cleaned up.?
Washington was led by the meet runner-up, sophomore Sarah Nacos, who carded a 40 on the day.
Senior Deanna Peiffer recorded a 44 on the day, while sophomore Megan Strabala notched a 49 and senior Brenna Burlingame posted a 51 to round out the counting scores on the day.
Sophomore Allison Vogel had a 59 for the day, while freshman Carly Burlingame posted a 72 in her first meet.
?They are fitting in nicely,? Kull said. ?They are friendly and have positive attitudes. They are playing well and it?s all about making relationships and being a part of the team.?
Columbus was led by Kortney Orr, who posted a 50 for the meet. She was followed up by Sarah Todd, Emily Duncan and Aubrey Duncan, who each carded 54s on the day.
Marissa Hafner posted a 60, while Grace Chapman notched a 62 for the Wildcats.
Behind Wertz?s big day, Mid-Prairie saw Paige Slabaugh notch a 55,while Olivia Nisly had a 59 and Lindsey Palmer carded a 63.
Tiffany Fisher and Abby Statler each carded 72s on the day.
Washington and Columbus will be back in action on Thursday, when the Demons head to Burlington and Columbus hosts Lone Tree and Danville.
Mid-Prairie will travel to Regina on Monday for its next meet.
