WASHINGTON — The Washington wrestling team got to celebrate two different types of thrills on Thursday night. The Demons not only knocked off a rival in their opening dual, but experienced a come-from-behind one-point victory in the second.
Washington started its home triangular with a 54-27 win over Mt. Pleasant. The Demons ended the night with a 40-39 victory over Muscatine.
“When you get two wins it's a lot of fun,” said Washington head coach Brent Van Weelden.
The Demons used a dominant performance in the lighter weights to get past Mt. Pleasant. Washington won all six from 106 pounds to 132 pounds, including pins from Nate Edmonds at 106, Max Anderson at 113, Caden Greiner and 126, Jack Kleese at 132, and Jude Carter at 138.
Washington’s Chase Greiner also picked up a pin at 152 pounds.
Mt. Pleasant’s William Birdsell scored a pin at 182 pounds. In the closest match of the night, Mt. Pleasant’s Bowen Davis outlasted Washington’s Lane Schrock via a 5-3 sudden victory win at 145 pounds.
“We had some kids go out there and wrestle well,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Anthony Blint. “Bowen had a win against a tough kid. That was a good match for him, there.”
Mt. Pleasant wrestled Muscatine next, and picked up five wins in the dual, including pins from Gavin Kerr at 152 pounds and Franklin Tousigant at 285.
That set up Washington’s final dual, against Muscatine. The Demons trailed 39-22 with just three matches to go, but finished it up with three-straight pins to steal the victory.
Along with pins from Colley Billingsley at 285 and Edmonds at 106 earlier in the dual, the Demons secured pins in the final three matches as Jude Carter (138), Schrock (145) and Chase Greiner (152) all did exactly what they needed to do.
After the triangular, Van Weelden praised his guys, especially Schrock, who polished his match off late in the second period.
“Lane Schrock getting that pin was huge,” Van Weelden said. "Obviously, he had to.“
Washington moved to 2-2 in SEC duals with the win over Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers are now 0-4 in the league.
