WASHINGTON — Down 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth, the Washington baseball team battled back to put the tying run on second base on Tuesday against Oskaloosa, but the Demons’ rally fell just short in a 7-5 loss.
“The little things are what are holding us back,” said Washington head coach Tyler Rausch. “We've got to continue to work on the little things.”
Washington entered the bottom of the sixth after a three-run Oskaloosa sixth put the Demons in a bind. Oskaloosa had rallied back from a 3-1 deficit of its own, scoring three each in the fifth and the sixth to take the three-run advantage.
Washington rallied back to score one run in the bottom of the sixth when a runner scored on a balk. After Chase Greiner pitched a scoreless top of the seventh, the Demons entered their final at-bat trailing 7-5.
The Demons put two on in the seventh when Kael Williams led off with a single, and Greiner reached on an error. They ended up on second and third respectively with two outs.
Austin Rebling lined a shot to right field, but it was right at the Oskaloosa right fielder, who hauled it in and recorded the final out of the ballgame.
“I'm very proud of the guys for not giving up,” Rausch said. “Down a couple of runs, some teams in the past might have folded. These guys are resilient.”
The Demons’ early lead came on a first-inning sacrifice fly by Noah Greiner. Rebling had a one-out RBI double in the second inning, and Williams scored one on a bunt single in the third.
Down 4-3 in the fourth, Ethan Patterson led the frame off with a double, and Caleb Zieglowsky knocked him in to tie things up.
Washington used a wealth of pitchers in the game. Lucas Zahs, Noah Greiner, James Strabala and Chase Greiner all saw time on the mound.
It was Washington’s fourth one-or-two run loss in a row. That includes a couple of one-run defeats against Fairfield on Monday.
On Thursday, the Demons (3-12, 3-5) host the Trojans (8-12, 4-4) with a chance at a little revenge.
“We're ready,” Rausch said. “We're itching to get right back at it.”
