Next season, the Demon Relays will know a different name.
Easily the top highlight from last night?s Demon co-ed senior night track meet was the recognition and renaming of the Demon Relays.
After honoring all the seniors, longtime head coach Steve Roth was honored for his time at the helm of the track program, as he is scheduled to retire at the end of the school year.
To go along with the recognition, was the renaming of the Demon Relays to the Steve Roth Relays starting next season.
?It was an amazing night,? Steve Roth said. ?It?s very humbling. All the alumni and my family made this happen, and I can?t thank them enough.?
To help celebrate the night, the Demons held the first alumni relay, with two heats of Washington alumni running a 4x150-meter relay, with Spencer Sorrell, Justin Greiner, Michael Hofer, and Alex Klopfenstein posting the lowest time in the event.
On the track, the Demon boys? and girls? teams posted some strong showings, with the girls taking third in the meet, while the boys took seventh.
On the girls? side of the meet, senior McKayla Miller claimed a meet title in the shot put, using a throw of 33 feet ? 9.25 inches to put her in front, while also finishing fifth in the discus.
Jessie Buchholz claimed a title in the 400-meter hurdles on the day, also helping the shuttle hurdle team to a second-place finish.
Senior Kelly Wheeler posted two top-5 finishes on the day, picking up third in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash.
On the boys? side of the meet, the 4x200-meter relay team of Ethan Hansen, Bryce Rickey, Kyle Schindler and Caleb Bex claimed the meet title, combining for a time of 1:37.73.
?That?s starting to shake out,? Roth said. ?Caleb stepped in and ran a solid 200, and it was great to see Ethan and Bryce win a medal on their senior nights.?
Senior Michael Ellingson picked up the lone individual top 5 finish, clearing 5 feet ? 8 inches in the high jump to finish in second.
Both Washington teams will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Fort Madison.
