BURLINGTON — The Washington soccer teams traveled to Burlington on Thursday for a Southeast Conference doubleheader. The Demon boys scooped up a dominant 4-1 victory, but the girls fell 1-0.
The Demon boys scored two goals within five minutes of each other in the first half. Edwin Cortes made it 1-0 with a goal in the 21st minute, and Bill De La Rosa took an assist from Lane Schrock and made it 2-0 in the 25th.
Burlington cut the Demons’ lead to 2-1 with a goal early in the second half, but Washington pulled away with two more. Cortes scored his second goal of the game in the 64th minute, getting an assist from Brayan Arreola, and Arreola made it 4-1 off an assist from Angel Mata just two minutes later.
Braedon Tappan had five saves in the win.
The Demon girls couldn’t pull out a win despite a 10-save performance from goalkeeper Aleigha Medley. The only goal of the game was a second-half score from Burlington’s Hunter Pender.
Washington had just one shot on goal in the loss. Giselle Marcelino had the Demons’ lone shot.
The Washington girls would bounce back one day later with a win over 3-2 Central Lee. The Demons used a goal and an assist from Marcelino, goals from Angeline Anderson and Audrey Anderson, and nine saves by Medley to pull out the victory.
