WASHINGTON — A tough non-conference opponent in the Centerville Redettes proved to be quite the thorn in the side for the Washington softball team on Wednesday night.
After leading 3-0, the Demons gave up four runs in the final two innings in what became tough 4-3 loss.
Demon pitcher Colbie Greiner cruised through the Centerville lineup for the first five innings. The Demons took a while to get going offensively as well, but eventually did so, in the fourth frame.
Ella Greiner stepped up to the plate and led the bottom of the fourth off with an opposite field solo home run to right field. That gave the Demons a 1-0 lead, and they’d tack on two more before the inning was over.
Lauren Hinrichsen scored after Colbie Greiner’s infield single led to some confusion in the Redette defense. Emery Walton followed that with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Unfortunately, the Demons could never add on, and Centerville came roaring back in the sixth. The Redettes sent two runners to the plate, and nearly got a third, but Hinrichsen made a nifty play at third base to throw the batter out on a groundout with two outs and a runner dashing home from third.
In the top of the seventh, a disputed call at first base led to two runners on with nobody out. Centerville did what it needed to do to get both home and take its first lead of the game, at 4-3.
Washington had just one more chance to tie or win the game. The Demons went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
After the game, Coach Ben Obermann said his Demon team played well, despite the loss.
“We did a lot of good things,” Obermann said. “Colbie threw a great game. We played good defense. We stung some balls right at people.”
Ella Greiner finished the game 1-for-3 with a homer and an RBI. Walton was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Salazar was 2-for-4.
The loss dropped Washington to 14-9 on the season.
“I can't nitpick too much,” Obermann said. “And the thing is, we get the opportunity to play again tomorrow.”
