MT. PLEASANT — The Washington softball team had some high expectations heading into 2023, and rightfully so. The No. 7 (3A) Demons, coming off an 11-3 conference record last season, got things going early and often at rival Mt. Pleasant.
The Demons shut the Panthers out 13-0 in Game 1, and completed the sweep with an 13-1 win in Game 2.
“I thought we were very patient at the plate, which was necessary,” said Demon assistant coach Lauren Obermann. “We swung at a lot of good pitches.”
Washington was anchored by a solid outing from ace Bella Salazar in Game 1. Salazar threw four one-hit innings in the opener, striking out seven batters to earn the victory.
“We have a pretty big chip, since we're ranked this year,” Salazar said. “A lot of people are coming for us, so we just need to put it all out there when we go out.”
Salazar was one of three Demons to finish the game with multiple RBIs. Colbie Greiner was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Salazar and Alyvia Anderson each had two hits and two runs batted in.
Leighton Salazar had two hits in the gam, and knocked in one. Rylee Libe finished 2-for-2 with two doubles.
In Game 2, Washington’s Colbie Greiner gave up just one unearned run on two hits over four innings. She struck out five.
Leighton Salazar was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Greiner went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, and Emery Walton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Mt. Pleasant’s Ty Alter picked up the loss on the mound in Game 1. Myah Starr was tagged with the loss in Game 2.
Washington (4-1, 2-0) and Mt. Pleasant (1-5, 0-2) will play again on Thursday. The Demons play a doubleheader in Knoxville on Wednesday.
