WASHINGTON — The Washington volleyball team hadn’t beaten Mediapolis since the two teams began playing an annual game in 2022, meaning Thursday night’s contest was another opportunity for the Demons to show how much they’ve grown up, and that’s just what they did.
One year after falling in four sets to the Bullettes, Washington got to flex its muscle, beating yet another quality opponent, this time in dominating fashion, taking sets 25-22, 25-21 and 25-20.
“We haven't taken a three set game at home in a long time,” said junior hitter Taylor Miksch. “It's been really fun playing really good teams. It shows how we can really do that this year.”
Mediapolis was in every set, but the Demons were too good up front. Washington had 33 kills on the night, with four different hitters collecting five or more.
“We were definitely on in all areas,” said Demon head coach Aaron Six. “I thought they did a great job at reading when to hit line and when to hit cross-court, and mixing things up with some off-speed stuff. They were just really dealing.”
Leighton Messinger led the way with 10 kills. Ella Greiner had nine. Miksch finished with seven. Layla Green had five, and both Lauren Hinrichseen and a Jade Sheetz finished with one.
Hinrichsen dished out a team-high 28 assists in the win. Elle Farmer had paced the team with 10 digs.
“I feel like the team chemistry this year is fabulous,” said senior libero Ruby Witthoft. “It's really good to be able to combat with the better teams.”
Over the weekend, Washington competed at the Anamosa tournament. The Demons scooped up one victory, beating Northeast 21-15 in two-straight sets.
