WASHINGTON — One day after a non-conference loss against Mid-Prairie, the Demon volleyball team took a tough Southeast Conference loss to Burlington.
“I compliment Burlington on their play,” said Demon head coach Aaron Six. “They came out, and they were the better team tonight.”
The visiting Grayhounds came into Washington and took all three sets, defeating the Demons 25-18, 25-22 and 25-15.
Things looked bleak early as Burlington got off to a 14-10 lead in the first set. The Demons got five kills from Leighton Messinger in the loss, but the Grayhounds wouldn’t be denied.
Washington was in position to tie things up after going up 18-14 in the second set. Messinger and Layla Green combined for 12 kills in the set, but Burlington came back tow in 25-22.
Everything went wrong for Washington in the third set. A Demon timeout was closely followed by an over-the-net deflection that led to a Burlington point. The Grayhounds scored on a handful of tipped balls, and a Demon serve clipped off the out of bounds pole before falling on Burlington’s side.
“We had opportunities where we had a couple of nice hits, and the ball deflects and kind of goes across the net and in,” Six said. “When you’re struggling on the floor, you need to have a couple of those things go your way.”
The loss dropped Washington to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
