Demon wrestling team takes first in Gary Curtis Invitational
The 51st annual Gary Curtis Invitational was held at Highland Saturday, Jan. 7. Washington continued their perfect season by taking first place out of 12 different schools scoring 203.5 points, 40 more than second-place West Liberty.
There were nine who finished in the top three of their weight brackets with two coming in first, Tristin Westphal-Edwards (160) and Tanner Murphy (220).

The 51st annual Gary Curtis Invitational was held at Highland Saturday, Jan. 7. Washington continued their perfect season by taking first place out of 12 different schools scoring 203.5 points, 40 more than second-place West Liberty.
There were nine who finished in the top three of their weight brackets with two coming in first, Tristin Westphal-Edwards (160) and Tanner Murphy (220).
Walker Ikerd (106) came in fourth and scored 10.5 points. He won the quarterfinals by a 21-3 technical fall over Hunter Stoll from Wilton.
He lost the semifinals to Nolan Noonan (Cascade) by a 5-3 decision and lost the third place match to Will Esmoil from West Liberty by a 6-4 in the first sudden victory round.
Garrett Ikerd (113) came in second place and scored 18 team points. He received a bye in the quarterfinals.
He won the semifinals by fall in 3:23 over Talen Dengler. He lost the first-place match to Samuel Loyd from New London by a 2-0 decision.
Brandon Dickel (120) came in third place and scored 11 points. After having a bye in the quarterfinals, he lost by fall to Connor Conlin from Cascade by fall in 3:06.
He won the third place match after pinning Cesar Neri from Columbus Community in 1:35.
Kyle Anderson (126) came in second place and scored 17 team points. He had a bye in the quarterfinals and won by a 13-1 major decision over Armando Quiroz from Columbus Community in the semifinals.
He lost the first-place match by a 6-2 decision to Brady Fritz from South Tama County.
Alex Latcham (132) lost the quarterfinals to Noah Bierman from West Liberty by fall in 2:27. He had a bye in the first consolation round and lost the consolation semifinals by medical forfeit to Jose Cerezo from Columbus Community.
Andrew Waite (138) came in third place and scored 15 points. He won the quarterfinals by fall over Julian Wikoff from New London in 1:22.
He lost the semifinals by fall in 2:19 to Colton Vest from South Tama County and won the third-place match by fall in 1:09 over Justis Dengler from West Liberty.
David Hora (145) finished in fifth place and scored 11 points.
He lost the quarterfinals by a 6-5 decision to David Cardoza from Muscatine. He won the consolation semifinals by fall over Garron Barber from Cascade in 0:52 and won the fifth place match by fall in 4:54 over Jacob Graves from West Branch.
Trey Van Weelden (152) came in third place and scored 13 points. He won the quarterfinals by fall in 0:45 over JT Cunningham from Columbus.
He lost the semifinals by an 8-0 major decision to Isaac Judge from South Tama county and won the third-place match by fall over Eli Faison from Wilton by an 8-1 decision.
Westphal-Edwards (160) came in first place and scored 24 points. He won the quarterfinals by fall over Carter Oldfield from Muscatine by fall in 1:43.
He won the semifinals by fall over A. J. Lenz from West Liberty by fall in 1:14. He won the first-place match by a 6-1 decision over Ryan Schott from Regina.
Logan Escher (170) came in fifth place and scored 13 points. He won the first championship round by fall over Zach Ries from Cascade in 1:52. He lost the quarterfinals by fall to Tucker Morrison from Columbus in 1:00.
He won the first consolation round by fall over Gavin Holmes from New London in 3:22. He won the consolation semifinals by a 5-2 decision over Joe Baker from West Liberty.
He won the fifth-place match by fall over Tanner Walz from South Tama County by fall in 3:17.
Collin Murphy (182) came in fourth place and scored 11 points. He won the quarterfinals by fall over Hunter Garrett from Cascade in 0:43.
He lost the semifinals by a 16-4 major decision to Bryce Oveson from Wilton and lost the third-place match to Mason Simpson from Regina by a 9-1 major decision.
Karlton Skubal (195) came in second place and scored 18 points. He won the quarterfinals by fall over Cael Kellogg from South Tama County in 1:09.
He won the semifinals in sudden victory 6-4 over Clay Harper from Tri-County. He lost the first-place match by fall in 5:18 to Bryce Esmoil from West Liberty.
Tanner Murphy (220) came in first place and scored 24 points. He had a bye in the quarterfinals. He won the semifinals by fall over Noah McCammant from Tri-County in 1:55. He won the first-place match by fall in 2:39 over Dalton Sell from Muscatine.
Mitchell Huisenga (285) came in second and scored 18 points. He won the quarterfinals by fall over Austin Van Amerongen from New London in 0:18.
He won the semifinals by a 5-0 decision over Paine DeLarm from Cascade and lost the first-place match to Jared Brinkman from Regina by fall in 1:07.
The Washington Demon wrestling team is now at 17-0 and will take to the mats Thursday, Jan. 12, in dual action against Mt. Pleasant. Action begins at 6:30 p.m.
