WASHINGTON — The now 13th-ranked (3A) Washington softball team got a boost on the schedule, but took a dip on its record on Wednesday.
On Independence Day Eve, Washington hosted No. 12 (4A) Clear Creek-Amana for a Top-15 showdown. An early barrage of Clipper runs led to an 11-6 loss.
CCA scored six runs in the first inning, including a grand slam by talented sophomore Lizzie Pasbrig, and the Demons could never get within striking distance of the lead. Washington trailed 7-0 after three innings, and didn’t start scoring until one run in the fourth and one in the fifth.
“It's really tough from a mental standpoint,” said Demon head coach Ben Obermann. “She's a good hitter. She's got seven bombs on the year, and she hit a really good change-up out of the yard.”
It took a while for the Demon offense to get going. After cutting the lead down to 7-2, CCA put up four runs in the top of the seventh inning, and at one point, led 11-2.
Washington began to storm back in its final at-bat. The Demons put up four in the bottom of the seventh, but they eventually ran out of time, and outs.
Despite the loss, Emery Walton had a nice game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Colbie Greiner knocked in two runs. Bella Salazar and Rylee Libe each knocked in one, and both Leighton Salazar and Ella Greiner collected a pair of hits.
Bella Salazar took the loss in the circle, giving up four earned runs over six innings. Haalle Cuddeback gave up four runs in relief.
Washington (22-11) will host another ranked team, in No. 12 (3A) Albia, on Tuesday night.
