The Mt. Pleasant and Washington softball teams battled to a split in a doubleheader at Mt. Pleasant?s Mapleleaf Athletic Complex on Thursday night. After a 10-0 Panther win in five innings in game one, the Demons pulled out the 8-7 win in a thrilling game two.
Megan Strabala had two of the three Washington hits in game one. Strabala finished the game 2-2 with two singles. Brooke Stout singled as well, going 1-2 in the loss.
Game two was a much different story. The two teams were neck and neck all game, with neither team getting more than a two-run lead until the final inning. There were four lead changes before the fifth inning was finished.
After four innings, the Panthers found themselves on top 3-2, but Washington refused to go away.
In the sixth, with the game tied at 5, Strabala gave the Demons the lead again with an RBI single, which was followed by a Morgan Brinning double to the fence that scored Strabala.
With the bases loaded in the seventh, Strabala earned a walk on four pitches to give the Demons the biggest lead of the game at 8-5.
A two-run, seventh-inning rally wasn?t enough for Mt. Pleasant as the Demons took the final game of the doubleheader.
Seven Demons had a mult-hit game in the game two win. Strabala, Megan Mitchell, Brinning, Kolbi Breard, Brooke Stoute, Haylee Wilson and Mackenzie Knutson all picked up two hits. Strabala, Brinning and Breard each had two RBIs, and Stout and Wilson each had one.
Taylor Dicks threw all seven innings to earn the win, giving up seven runs on ten hits and no walks, while striking out two.
Washington went to 5-26 overall and 1-15 in conference. They will host Williamsburg tonight, and finish out the home schedule with Central Lee on Monday, July 6.
