Another strong meet from the Washington girls? golf team was helped by one of the lowest scores of the season by Demon senior Brenna Burlingame.
Burlingame notched her season-best nine-hole score of 42 in the meet in Ottumwa, as the Demons picked up a 174-196 victory over the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
The victory improves the Demons? perfect season, as they sit at third among all state teams (regardless of class) in nine-hole average score.
?I think we are doing fine,? Washington head coach Leonard Kull said. ?Even though we?ve been playing at a really high level, each girl knows that, even though they might not be big things, there are things that affect their scores and that?s what we are going to spend time on. We aren?t just going to take four or five strokes off some of the scores, because you just can?t.?
The Demons were led by sophomore Sarah Nacos, who posted a 37 on the day, while senior Deanna Peiffer notched a 42.
Burlingame used solid course management to earn her 42 on the day, and Kull said he?s been waiting for her to have a round like this all season.
?She hits the ball a long way, but sometimes she gets into a little trouble,? Kull said. ?She was able to get out of trouble pretty quickly, and as it turned out, she putted very well. She made some real sizable putts, for sure. If you are able to do that, you?ll be able to surprise yourself. She had good course management and she?s getting better in the short game.?
Megan Strabala posted the final counting score with a 52 on the day.
In the scratch scores, freshman Carly Burlingame posted a career-best 58 in her round, while Allison Vogel carded a 59.
Washington has a few days off until their next meet, and hope to use that time to refresh themselves and refocus on the second half of the season.
?(The break) was kind of designed on purpose,? Kull said. ?Most of our duals are over now, and that means they won?t be playing with their teammates as much. They?ll have to focus on themselves, and I think that?s good. We have a few days to critique their progress and spend time organizing ourselves for the next phase. That?s the conference and tournament run here in May.?
The Demons will have a pair of home meets next week, with Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant currently scheduled to play at the Washington Golf and Country Club on Monday afternoon.
