FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield softball team entered Wednesday night’s game up 2-0 against first-place Washington, but as the night went on, the eighth-ranked Demons had plenty of time to rally.
Washington kept its undefeated Southeast Conference season alive with a 7-2 victory.
“Obviously, it's a tough situation, but we're an experienced group,” said Washington head coach Ben Obermann. “I told them, just take it like we do every game.”
The game picked up in the second inning after raining out with Fairfield leading 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
Washington ace Bella Salazar kept the Trojans scoreless all night long, allowing the Demons to cut into the lead.
Washington tied the game early on, helped out by an RBI hit by Ella Greiner in the fourth inning. The Demons took the lead when Colbie Greiner blasted a two-run home run to right field.
“I thought that was an easy pop-out,” said Colbie Greiner after the game. “I thought it was going to be caught.”
The Demons would never look back. Washington scored four total runs in the fifth, and added one more in the seventh.
“We try to stay up in the dugout a lot,” said Colbie Greiner after the win. “We bring a lot of energy and always stay confident.”
Leighton Salazar ended the game a perfect 3-for-3 to lead the Demons. Colbie Greiner went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Alyvia Anderson went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bella Salazar and Ella Greiner each had one RBI.
Bella Salazar gave up just three hits in the game. Fairfield’s Maddy Martin had two knocks, finishing 2-for-3. Savannah Hollander went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
“We knew they were going to score some runs,” said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. “The question was, would we score anymore. Regardless of what Washington did, we didn't score any runs tonight.”
Both Laney Norris and Leah Helmick saw time in the circle for Fairfield. Norris gave up one earned run and Helmick gave up six runs (three earned).
