FORT MADISON — Washington girls basketball had a shot to make a jump in the Southeast Conference rankings on Tuesday night in Fort Madison, but a third quarter run by the Bloodhounds made all the difference in a 56-49 Fort Madison victory.
A win would have moved the Demons into second place in the SEC standings, but instead Washington sits at 2-2. There’s still plenty of basketball yet to be played as Burlington and Fort Madison both hold just one game advantages, 3-1, while Keokuk is currently in the lead at 4-0.
After just 16 minutes of action between the Bloodhounds and Demons on Tuesday it was anyone's contest. Washington trailed by just one at the half, but out of the break a 14-3 run by Fort Madison shifted the game even more into its favor.
It was a deficit of which the Demons could not overcome.
Adalyn Long led Washington with 17 points. Kendall Hinrichsen followed with 11 points, nine of which came in the second half.
The matchup marked the final game of the year for the Washington girls as winter break has started.
The Demons will be back in action on January 5 against Burlington at home.
