BURLINGTON — Things were looking bleak for Washington boys soccer on Monday night against Burlington.
The Demons trailed the Grayhounds 1-0 for over 65 minutes, but with just two minutes to go Washington’s Brayan Arreola drilled a free kick from around 30 yards out to tie it 1-1.
In the pair of overtime periods, both teams made runs at goal but none found their mark and sent the game into penalty kicks.
Arreola scored the first of the penalties, but Burlington answered right back. The next three Demon shot were on frame, but saved by the Grayhound goalie.
Burlington went on to score its four penalties and a fifth penalty wasn’t needed as Washington came up short 2-1 after a 4-1 penalty shootout.
For over 25 minutes of the first half, Burlington held much of the offensive possession, but Washington did well to limit the attack.
While they didn’t create an abundance of opportunities through the opening half, Washington had two stellar opportunities to score.
The first came early on as a miss touch by the Grayhound goalie gave Washington’s Lane Schrock an open look at goal, but his shot was just wide of the bar.
The second came late in the half as Kevin Marcelino got a one-on-one opportunity, but his low shot was deflected by the keeper.
Burlington’s opening goal came with 15:36 on the clock in the first half as Grayhounds slotted the ball into the upper right corner.
From then on to the 2:26 mark in the second, neither team would score until Arreola’s free kick knotted the game.
Washington head coach was proud of the way the team fought.
“Our team focused all the way through 100 minutes and didn't give up,” Hart said. “They showed tenacity tonight.”
Washington moves to 6-4 in Southeast Conference play and sits at 8-5 overall. The Demons will take on Hillcrest Academy on Thursday.
