FAIRFIELD — Washington trailed Fairfield on Friday for nearly all 32 minutes of the two’s Southeast Conference battle.
It wasn’t until the final seconds of contest that Washington grabbed its first lead and they wouldn’t give it up for a 43-40 victory.
To start the fourth quarter between the two teams, Fairfield held onto a 31-26 lead after the Trojan’s Savannah Hollander knocked down one of two from the stripe.
Through seven minutes the Trojans and Demons tied three times with the final coming after a free throw from Washington’s Addison Miller made it 40-40.
Fairfield did well to break the Demons press for the majority of the night, but a turnover created by the Demons with just over 40 seconds remaining was the difference maker.
Washington’s Adalyn Long was fouled with 37.4 seconds to go. After missing the first free throw, Long knocked down the second to give the Demons their first lead of the night, 41-40.
Fairfield got a pair of opportunities to take the lead, but couldn’t find the points after a steal gave the ball back to the Demons. Meanwhile, Kendall Hinrichsen hit two free throws with 7.6 seconds left to give Washington a 43-40 point advantage.
While Fairfield led after every quarter, Washington was never down by more than nine.
The Trojans led 11-7 after the first and 19-16 at the half before Washington completed the comeback in the fourth.
Adalyn Long finished with a team-high 13 points. Addison Miller followed with 10 points and hit a trio of three balls to help the Demons stay in it.
Savannah Hollander finished with 17 points to lead Fairfield.
Washington moves to 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Fairfield drops to 0-5 and 0-2 in SEC play.
