WASHINGTON — Washington put together exactly the performance it needed to in its 3A Region 8 opener on Thursday against Midland.
The Demons put together a complete performance, walking away with a 10-0 victory over the Eagles.
“It feels really good to get the win,” Washington pitcher Bella Salazar said. “It’s especially great knowing we get another home game on Saturday.”
Washington built a 4-0 lead over Midland through the first two innings and they would never give it up.
Bella Salazar knocked in her sister, Leighton Salazar in the first frame.
As good as Washington was at the plate in the matchup, tallying 11 hits, the Demons were equally as sharp defensively.
Bella Salazar played a large part, holding the Eagles to just three hits with four strikeouts. Midland was seeing the ball well at the plate, but the Demon defense made play after play to keep the Eagles at bay. That’s something that Salazar is grateful to have behind her.
“It’s really great knowing that I have them to back me up,” Salazar said. “It helps that I don’t have to throw a lot of strikeouts.”
In the second, Lauren Hinrichsen delivered on an 0-2 count with an two RBI double that scored Emery Walton and Colbie Greiner. Hinrichsen crossed home during the next at-bat on a wild pitch to put Washington up 4-0.
After back-to-back scoreless innings, the Demons added three each in the fifth and sixth to end it.
Leighton Salazar scored the opening run in the fifth inning off a wild pitch after stealing both second and third.
Bella Salazar and Colbie Greiner each carded RBIs in the inning to push the Demons lead to 7-0.
To close it out, Ella Greiner and Bella Salazar both hit RBIs, followed by an Alyvia Anderson hit to right center.
“We always enjoy these wins,” Washington head coach Ben Obermann said. “They don’t come easy. The longer your alive in postseason play the more fun it gets. It was a really great game for us in all three phases.”
Leighton Salazar led the Demons going 3-for-4 in the win. Bella Salazar went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Colbie Greiner and Lauren Hinrichsen both had two hits. Hinrichsen finished with two RBIs and Greiner one.
Ella Greiner and Alyvia Anderson both had RBIs as well. Kendall Hinrichsen finished with a hit too.
