WASHINGTON — Washington and Mt. Pleasant squared off in a Southeast Conference volleyball head-to-head on Tuesday night.
With a win, Washington was looking to stay right on conference leading Burlington’s heels, while the Panthers with a win could make a jump in the standings.
Walking away with the victory was Washington in 3-0 fashion, 25-12, 25-19 and 25-15.
Washington came out looking like a team on a mission, but Mt. Pleasant was right there as well.
In the opening set, the Panthers found themselves down just four, 13-9, at the midway point.
However, the Demons really put their foot on the pedal after that.
The Demons held the Panthers to just three more points the rest of the match, headlined by a 7-0 themselves.
After a kill from Taylor Miksch and three straight kills from Leighton Messinger, the Demons held onto a commanding 23-11 lead before putting it away.
In set two, the Panthers battled the entire way.
The two squads tied a whopping 14 times before the Demons gained just an edge late.
An ace from Addison Clark and a kill from Kynlee White gave the Panthers one point leads at 15-14 and 16-15, but they couldn’t hold it.
A kill from the Demon’s Ella Greiner sparked what was a 4-0 run by Washington to make it 19-16.
Alex Scott hammered one home to get the Panthers back within two at 19-17, but the Demons closed on a 6-2 run.
Set three was all Washington early as the Demons darted out to a 13-4 advantage.
Mt. Pleasant stayed poised. The Panthers continued to chip away getting it down to five at 15-10 and then four at 17-13.
However, that’s as close as they would come as the Demons once again ended on a big run, 8-2.
Leighton Messinger finished with 17 kills for the Demons. Layla Green followed with nine. Ella Greiner and Taylor Miksch both had eight each.
Lauren Hinrichsen dished out 43 assists.
Ellie Farmer ended with a team-high 15 assists. Messinger and Greiner each had 12.
Greiner also finished with four aces in the win.
Washington improves to 10-10 with the win. Mt. Pleasant drops to 6-14.
