FT. MADISON - The Washington High School girls basketball team claimed a Southeast Conference victory Tuesday over the Bloodhounds 46-23 while the boys won 73-60.
1st 11-4, 2nd 17-3, 3rd 13-7, 4th 5-9. The Demon girls held the home team scoreless for the last 6 minutes of the first quarter and the first 3 minutes of second quarter, leading 28-7 at halftime.
'We did a good job of taking them out of their offense by putting a lot of pressure on the ball handler,” WHS coach Shannon Rugg said. 'We got more confidence as the game went on. We did a good job of rebounding the ball.”
The Demons had a 41-26 edge on the boards.
Kinzy Duwa led the Demons with nine points and swiped three steals. Isabel Bailey had eight points, four rebounds, five steals and two assists. Kira Ropp has seven points and six rebounds. Olivia Pacha tallied six points and five rebounds. Addison Six notched six points and three rebounds. Phelan Hostetler had four points and three rebounds.
'Our bench out-scored our starters 24-22,” Rugg said. 'That shows how balanced we are and makes it hard to defend us due to everybody scoring rather than just one girl. We did a better job of limiting our turnovers against their press and ran our offense better than we have been. Once again, we played as a team and really competed on the defensive side of the ball. Duwa came in and sparked us offensively. She did a good job of attacking the basket and then knocked down a couple of 3s. I thought the whole team played well.”
The Demon girls (4-4 overall, 1-2 SEC) stop a three-game losing streak and play at Louisa-Muscatine Thursday while the boys (2-5, 1-2) also ended a three-game slide and will host Albia Thursday.
Trashaun Willis went for a game-high 22 points in the boys game that was close until the final quarter. The Demons led 13-12 after one quarter, 28-26 after two and 50-47 after three. A 23-13 advantage in the final stanza sealed the win.
'We tended to settle for 3s in the first quarter and started attacking the basketball more in the second half,” WHS coach Collin Stark said. 'Trashaun had a great game, especially in the second half with attacking the basketball and getting second-chance points. We did a great job sharing the basketball. Overall, a great team win!”
Trevor Quigley scored all 15 of his points in the second half. Luke Turner scored eight of his 11 in the first half.
