It was a big night in Fort Madison for the Washington girls? soccer team on Thursday night.
After opening up the season 0-5, the Demons got things rolling against the Bloodhouds early, and picked up their first win of the season, downing Fort Madison 2-1 on the road.
?They felt a little satisfaction,? Washington girls? soccer head coach Kyle Collins said. ?They gave it 100 percent both halves and it showed. We had more scoring opportunities. Win or lose, we?d still have that satisfaction that we gave it 100 percent that whole time.?
After going scoreless in the past two games, the Demons didn?t wait long to start things off in this game.
Senior Lauren Swan ended the scoring drought in the sixth minute with her first goal of the year, to put the Demons on top 1-0.
A Fort Madison goal before halftime tied the game up, but the Demons didn?t panic.
After a near goal for the Bloodhounds, Washington?s Kristen Barber put one in the back of the net, and the Demons would hold on to earn the first win of the year.
?We still had our confidence going into the second half, and I think there were 15 minutes left when we got our second goal,? Collins said. ?Fort Madison had a goal in the back of our net, but they kicked the ball out of (Washington goalie Tara Gould?s) hands, and the call got made. We had to play through that, then we got the second goal and held them off. It was a good feeling for them and for the coaches.?
Washington will be at home for both of its matches next week, starting with Mt. Pleasant on Monday afternoon at 4:30.
