WASHINGTON — Washington girls basketball put together one of its most complete performances of the season on Friday night in a Southeast Conference clash with Burlington.
With the Demons needing a win to stay within one game of SEC leading Keokuk, they got the job done taking down the Grayhounds 60-50.
It took Washington a couple of minutes to get going in the league matchup, but midway through the opening period and the Demons would never miss a beat.
Burlington jumped out to a 6-2 lead through just under three minutes into the contest, but a 6-2 run with baskets coming from Adalyn Long and Kendall Hinrichsen knotted the game at 8-8.
The Grayhounds pulled away once more creating four points of separation with just over a minute and half to go, but back-to-back buckets from Long including a two and three jump started a 8-0 run to the end of the quarter.
Heading into the second period, the Demons led 16-12 and they wouldn’t give it up.
Defense shined through the following eight minutes as Washington scored just seven points through four and a half minutes. But during that span, the Demons held the Grayhounds without a bucket.
Burlington ended the quarter on a 9-4 run, but the Demons held onto a 27-21 advantage at the half.
In the third, third got intense.
Burlington quickly pulled within one, 27-26, as the Grayhound’s Mylee Stiefel scored five straight out of the gate.
However, that was as close as it would come as Long and Lauren Hinrichsen drilled back-to-back threes to once again extend the Demons lead, 33-26.
Washington closed the quarter with an 11-8 run, which included a Oaklee Sobaski basket with time running out.
At the beginning of the fourth, Washington led 44-34. Both teams were dead even in the final frame as buckets were traded back and forth with each team dropping in a cool 16 points, meaning the Demons would prevail.
Long led Washington with 22 points, 16 of which were scored in the first half. Kendall Hinrichsen ended with 10.
The Demons move to 3-2 in SEC play and 6-5 overall.
