WASHINGTON — The Washington and Fairfield boys soccer teams gave fans quite the performance on Thursday night in their Southeast Conference (SEC) clash.
While there was just one goal scored in the contest, both teams showed a lot of fight on both sides of the ball.
When all was said and done, Washington came out on top with a 1-0 victory.
The Demons controlled the ball for the majority of the match, but Fairfield never stopped playing.
Washington pushed the pace right out of the gate, but the Demons just could not find the back of the net.
For Fairfield, the Trojans relied heavily on the free kick to try and get the ball inside the Washington box to create an opportunity.
More often than not, the Washington back line contained the pressure.
For over 36 minutes, neither team could break open the game offensively.
But a minute later, Emanuel Raymundo put the Demons on the board off a pass from Kelver Lopez.
The ball would never find the back of the net again and the Demons headed into halftime with the 1-0 advantage.
In the second half it was much of the same.
The Demons used the wind to their advantage and continually bombed the ball downfield and into the Trojans half.
Fairfield was able to get the ball inside the eight-yard box on numerous occasions, but no Trojan was able to get on the end of it.
As Washington continued to control the middle of the field, Fairfield’s last two attempts were narrowly thwarted.
With 14:34 remaining, the Trojan’s Jaxen Allen got a one-on-one with the Washington keeper after a free kick from Carter Moore.
The Demons DaShaun Westphal-Edwards dove for the ball just in time as the shot was blocked.
Within the next minute, the Trojans created another opportunity with a shot just outside the box. This time the ball hit the crossbar and Washington was awarded a goal kick.
From then on out, the Demons kept the ball in the Trojans half of the field as time ran out.
For Washington, Westphal-Edwards, Will Gilchrist Brock and Omar Roman all played goalie. The trio finished with eight saves.
The Demons took 23 shots in the game and send 13 toward the net.
Washington improves to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in SEC play.
Fairfield drops to 1-3 on the season.
