BURLINGTON — Scoreless at halftime, the Washington girls soccer team netted the first goal of its road Southeast Conference game, but Burlington’s Kevyn Siefken scored twice in the final 13 minutes to give the Grayhounds the win, 2-1, Monday at Bracewell Stadium.
“I’m proud of our girls,” Washington head coach Steven Caulk. “I think they did the best that they could under adverse circumstances.”
With less than 11 minutes elapsed in the second half, Giselle Marcelino received a pass from Greta Rothe and sent it home for the Demons lead.
“It was a goal that I didn’t think would go in, but I just used my speed and I saw that (Burlington goalkeeper) wasn’t in the middle, and she dove for it, and I just roped it under her, and it went in,” said Marcelino, who was playing a new position. ”I’ve never played striker before and that was a big change for us. I’m usually an attacking midfielder. It was definitely challenging without her.”
Her is the state’s third-leading scorer, Trina Griffin, who did not play.
“We were playing a little short-handed, so that caused us some problems,” Caulk said. “We had to move some people around to some positions they’re just not familiar with.”
Washington is 2-1, 1-1 SEC and Burlington is 2-0, 2-0.
