SOLON - Nobody has figured out the second-ranked Solon football team this fall, and Washington couldn’t be the one to do it on Friday night.
Despite a relatively-promising first quarter, Washington fell well short of the district-favorite, as No. 2 Solon dropped the Demons 42-0.
Washington only gave up one touchdown in the first quarter, and the Demon defense only let up one in the second half, but a 28-point Spartan second proved to be Washington’s demise, as well as the touted Solon defense keeping the Demons off the scoreboard.
Solon led the game 7-0 after the first 12 minutes, then 35-0 at halftime. The running clock was on again in the second half, the third time in three district games for the Spartans.
Washington only earned 78 yards of total offense, and 60 of those were through the air. Kael Williams threw for 46 yards, and Nic Stone threw for 14.
When Stone wasn’t the one throwing the ball, he was Williams’ favorite receiver. He caught six passes for 33 yards. Liam Roberts caught four balls for 16.
Williams picked up 21 yards on the ground. He was the only Demon with double digit rushing yards, as the rest of the team went for a negative total.
Stone had a pretty solid game all around, even picking two balls off in the loss. His two interceptions went for a total of 40 run-back yards.
Clayton Evans led the Demon defense with eight tackles.
Washington is now 3-4 overall and 1-2 in district play, but the Demons can still make the playoffs, having to beat Ft. Madison at home and Keokuk on the road, while being helped out by other games around Class 3A.
Solon (7-0, 3-0) will play at Mt. Pleasant (6-1, 3-0) on Friday night to decide who takes home the district title.
