WASHINGTON — Washington has been putting together some stellar performances on the hardwood through the past week, picking up a pair of Southeast Conference wins against Fairfield and Keokuk.
On Monday night, that two game win streak came to an end after a 68-61 loss to Ottumwa at home. What was a back and forth affair turned into a Bulldog win late as they closed on a big run to seal it.
It was quite the battle early on as both squad exchanged blows through the opening period.
Midway through the first quarter, the Demons trailed the Bulldogs by just three, 13-11. However, from that point on it was all Ottumwa to the end of the opening eight minutes.
The Bulldogs outscored the Demons 13-5 to the end of the quarter to take a 25-16 lead into the second.
Washington answered in a big way in the second frame, posting their highest point total of the evening while outscoring Ottumwa 20-13, which included a three ball from freshman Nic Stone with five seconds on the clock, to make it a two point ballgame heading into halftime, 38-36.
Things got even better for Washington in the third as they grabbed multiple leads, but by the end of the quarter it was the Bulldogs still leading 53-49.
In the fourth it was much of the same. After another tight knit six minutes of action, the Demons found themselves with a one-point lead with just a minute to go.
To Washington’s demise, the Bulldogs ended the game on a 10-1 run, which included three straight buckets in the final 40 seconds.
Sophomores Drew Conrad and Rajan Roth each finished with 11 points and senior Roman Roth scored 10. The Demons fall to 6-7 with the loss.
