WASHINGTON — The Washington baseball team had its hands full on Monday night when eighth-ranked Pella came to town. The Demons kept it entertaining throughout the evening, but the Dutch walked out with a 7-1 win.
Pella scored two runs in the first inning and one each in the second and third to hold a 4-0 lead all the way into the fifth, thanks in part to a two run-saving lineout double play turned by Luke Beenblossom. Washington was still in the game, but a two-run Pella sixth dug the Demons into a deeper hold.
Down 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Caleb Zieglowsky delivered when an infield single gave the Demons their first run and Washington had two more in scoring position, but the Demon offense couldn’t get the next two runs across.
Pella would score one more insurance run in the top of the seventh to retake a six-run advantage.
Despite the loss, the Demons had a nice pitching performance from freshman Ethan Peebler, who threw five innings and gave up just four earned runs in only his first career start.
“You throw a freshman, getting his first start, especially late in the season, going against a Top-10 team in 3A,” said Washington head coach T.J. Rausch. “Hats off to him. He competed.”
Fellow freshman Blayze Richardson came in to relieve Peebler. He gave up three earned runs over two innings.
The Washington offense only mustered three hits. Kael Williams, Zieglowsky and Mason Morgan each went 1-for-3.
