WASHINGTON — The Washington baseball team had come so close to its first Southeast Conference win on multiple occasions through the first half league play this summer, but going into Monday, it hadn’t gotten the job done.
That wasn’t the case at all when the Demons hosted Keokuk for an SEC doubleheader at Washington High School. Washington blew the Chiefs out 12-2(5) in Game 1, and 12-3 in Game 2.
Washington had no trouble getting out of the gate offensively in either contest. In Game 1, the Demons jumped on the Chiefs with five runs in the bottom of the fifth and never trailed.
Washington‘s lead was down to 6-2 midway through the fourth, but three runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the fifth helped the Demons put it away early.
Blayze Richardson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Demons on offense. Julian Parsons had a big game himself, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Luke Schiebel and Boden Brown each finished with one hit and two RBIs. Mitchell Zieglowsky had a hit and an RBI.
Washington’s Ethan Peebler got the win on the mound, pitching three no-hit innings, and giving up one unearned run. He struck out eight batters, but walked five. Richardson gave up just one earned run in two innings of relief.
In Game 2, Keokuk got out to an early 1-0 lead, but Washington answered with three in the first and two in the fifth to jump out to an 8-1 advantage.
With the game relatively close, at 8-5, Washington closed the door in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three more runs.
Conner Leyden went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in the Game 2 win. Parsons knocked in two runs. Richardson, Isaac Medrano, Schiebel and Easton Rugg all knocked in one.
Leyden picked up the win on the mound, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks, while striking out seven batters over five innings of work. Parsons and Rugg each pitched one shut out inning.
The victory doubled the win total for Washington overall, putting the Demons at 4-9. In conference, they sit at 2-6, now just one game behind Fort Madison for fourth place.
