WASHINGTON — Washington had its hands full on Friday night, as No. 8 (3A) Davenport Assumption came into town.
The Demons hung in there early, but a late score in the second quarter sparked a big run for the Knights, who would go on to win 35-0.
“We battled,” said Washington head coach Nick Ehret. “They're a very good team, and we knew that coming in.”
Washington’s defense played well early. The Demons held a stacked Assumption offense to just seven points in the first quarter, and the score was only 14-0 late in the second.
The Demon offense, however, couldn’t get things going. Washington found itself backed up in its own territory with just three minutes left in the half when the snap got away on a punt attempt, and the Demons got just a handful of net yards on a kick that went out of bounds.
Assumption stepped up to capitalize on the punt, and the Knights would score once more before the turn of the half, making what was a two-score game 21-0 at the break.
“We had some untimely penalties, and then a bad snap on a punt,” Ehret said. “We just can't afford to do things like that against a team like this.”
Assumption would go on to score on the first drive of the second half, and the Knights would put up another touchdown before the night was over.
Logan McDole threw for 120 yards on the day. The Demon quarterback didn’t throw for any touchdowns but he stayed away from interceptions as well.
Oliver Hobscheidt caught five passes for 53 yards. Conner Leyden grabbed two passes for 31 yards. Mason Morgan caught two passes for 21 yards, and Alec Ulin hauled in a one-yard pass.
Ulin and Morgan paced the defense with eight and seven tackles respectively. Washington’s defense didn’t force any turnovers in the win.
Washington (2-5) has another tough one next week, when the Demons travel north to take on No. 4 Mount Vernon
